Why learn to write well today

“AI can write almost anything now. Why bother improving?” you might ask.

On the surface, it looks like AI-generated content can replace a lot of the writing we do. Why not learn to write prompts instead — fiddle with one of the large models — until that article, email, or spec that you’d otherwise struggle with comes out?

The reasons are several. Writing organises your mind, creates structure around raw ideas, allows you to process information better, and can raise your voice above the sea of AI noise we’re sure to be drowning in soon.

Write to organise your mind

Storing our thoughts outside our brain allows us to shift perspective and analyse that information from a different angle. We can shape, give structure to, and iterate on our thinking much better when it is in front of our eyes.

Having ideas while walking the dog or in the shower is great but they will crystallise when you write them out.

Writing helps you remember things by triggering something called the generation effect. It’s a phenomenon that neuropsychologists have identified helps individuals remember the things
